Laser therapy uses focused light energy directed at tissue beneath the skin. The light penetrates to a targeted depth where it has a warming effect on the cells and encourages a measurable healing response.

At the cellular level, the light energy is used to make more ATP – think of ATP as the “fuel” that cells run on. With more fuel available, the cells have what they need to repair themselves and keep working properly. The practical effects are:

Older animals are often the best candidates. They are the most likely to have chronic joint pain, the most likely to have medication limitations from age related organ changes, and the most likely to benefit meaningfully from added comfort.

What a Laser Therapy Session Involves

Sessions are short and simple. Most treatments take somewhere between five and twenty minutes depending on the area being treated and the condition involved.

Your pet rests comfortably, either on the floor, on a table, or in your lap for smaller animals, while a team member moves the laser handpiece over the treatment area. Both your pet and our staff wear protective eyewear during the session, which is standard practice.

Nothing about the process requires your pet to hold still in an unnatural position or tolerate anything uncomfortable. Many pets relax and even doze off.

How Many Sessions Will My Pet Need?

It depends on the condition.

Acute problems such as a wound, a hot spot, or a recent injury often respond within a handful of treatments delivered close together over a week or two.

Chronic conditions such as arthritis typically follow a different pattern. We usually begin with a more frequent series of sessions to build a cumulative effect, then taper to a maintenance schedule that keeps your pet comfortable over the long term. Some pets do well with a session every few weeks; others need less.

Improvement is sometimes visible after the first or second treatment, though for chronic conditions the meaningful gains usually build over the course of a series. We will assess how your pet is responding and adjust the plan accordingly.

Is Laser Therapy Right for Every Pet?

While laser therapy is a safe approach for most pets, there are a few situations where we avoid it or modify our approach. We do not treat directly over known or suspected cancerous tumors, over the abdomen of a pregnant animal, or directly over the eyes. Pets with certain conditions or on light sensitizing medications may need a modified plan.

We will review your pet’s full medical history before beginning, and we will tell you honestly if we do not think laser therapy is the best treatment option for your pet.
